NEW YEAR OPENING TIMES
Merry Christmas to all our customers! It has been a record Christmas for Barkworths - thank you all for your custom.
We are open next week on Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st December, 8am-4pm, then closed for New Year, During the first two weeks of January we have an exciting new refit happening at Barkworths. This means we will be closed for two weeks until Tuesday 20th January. By the time we re-open, most of the fishermen will have gone back to work - we have planned the refit to coincide with the fishing industry's prolonged Christmas/New Year break to minimise disruption to our customers. Whilst the work is going on, the phone line will be out of action, so please contact us if you need to via this webiste or Facebook/Twitter. We will endeavour to continue our restaurant deliveries as usual. Please bear with us during this time while these essential works are carried out - we promise it will be worth it!
Happy New Year to you all,
CHRISTMAS IS COMING...
We are now taking orders for Christmas. Our Seafood Platters were incredibly popular last year - see our website for details. We also stock smoked salmon, caviars, fresh crabmeat, and much more. Why not try something different this Christmas?
FOOD FESTIVAL HERE WE COME!
And so the 2nd Shrewsbury Food Festival is upon us this weekend!
Visit us for our Special Food Festival Menu - taster dishes for £5 each
'COAST' - a taster selection of seafood
'BOUILLABAISSE' - our trademark fish stew
'THE MAINE COURSE' - a lobster sandwich
I will also be doing a food demonstration in the Market Hall on Sunday at 12 midday - come along if you'd like to find out more about how to cook fish using your senses!
Hope to see lots of you there
And so the Sea Trout season begins!
Firstly, I would like to apologise to those who would have liked to see the seafood bar open a bit more than it has been lately. I have been struggling for the last five weeks with a slipped disc, so have been in and out of work - during this time we have had to concentrate on the the fishmonger's side of the the business which is our primary business activity. Saint Pierre is the 'icing on the cake' so-to-speak and so sometimes has to take a back seat. I would much rather do one thing well than let two things suffer because we are understaffed.
All that said, on a brighter note we are opening as usual this week (Tuesday 10th June) and we also have the Shrewsbury Food Festival coming up at the end of the month (28th-29th). I will be doing a demonstration in the Market Hall on the Sunday of that weekend. I will be posting more details nearer the time regarding what is going on both here and around the market.
On the fish side of things, I have to say that we have some cracking produce coming in at the moment. Plenty of variety form our Cornish and Whitby dayboat merchants - with Black Bream, Red Mullet, Turbot, John Dorys, Lobsters and even some Garfish and Whitby Langoustines being bought and sold over the counter.
For me though, the most exciting news currently is the start of the Wild Seatrout and Salmon season. We have had plenty of legally netted Scarborough Seatrout (all come with their own Environmental Agency tags) come in over the last two weeks. Coupled with the start of the English and French Samphire season it is probably my favourite time of the year. If you've never tasted Seatrout, let me tell you it's wonderful and a real treat!
Next post in about a week.
New - local Welsh fresh fish!
First I would like to thank all our customers who have supported us during the last financial year. You helped last year to be our busiest one ever and our turnover was up a considerable amount. This benefits all of us and will help us to expand our range, update our equipment and continue to provide the level of service you deserve in Shrewsbury.
We have two exciting pieces of news to report. Firstly, on the staff front, we have two new apprentices joining our team - Ben & Jordan will be starting on April 7th. They will join our existing staff members Katie and Adelaide in working towards achieving Level Two Seafood Industrial Qualifications.
Secondly, on the fish front, throughout the summer we will be selling rod-caught Welsh Seabass, gill-netted Grey Mullet and Welsh lobsters - all caught by two licensed fisherman based in Tywyn, Wales. They will be selling directly to us, meaning we can sell fresh local seafood at unbeatable prices for wild fish. Look out for "Fish from Tywyn" - Wild Seabass, Wild bass fillets, beach-caught Mullet, beach-caught Mullet fillets, Mackerel, Skate Wings, pot-caught lobsters along with the odd surprise fish which turns up. One of these fisherman once caught a 14lb Trigger fish off Tywyn - so you never know what we might have in!
These fish are all for sale either retail or wholesale and can be prepped and vacuum packed to your requirements for the freezer.
I don't know about you but I am really excited about this new lead and hope to develop this relationship with the local fishermen on our nearest coastline in the future.
All the best for now,
A fresh fishy tale from Shrewsbury

Happy New Year to all our customers
We always have a gentle start to the year as regards fresh fish supplies, as day-boats take a break from fishing over the Christmas and New Year period. But, we are fully up and running again with some cracking fresh Cornish and Scarborough day-boat fish being landed and delivered. Take a look on the 'Our Fish' pages to see what we have in stock this week.
Watch out for some exciting new developments on our website this year! We have lots more to add yet.
So, pop in and see us sometime this week - have a look at what we've got in and start your year eating healthily!
All the best,
A Happy Christmas to all our customers!

Smoked Salmon supplier carries Royal warrant
We have used the same supplier of Smoked salmon for many years now, and have only ever had great feedback about their products.
We stock a fantastic range of Cornish crabmeat products, all handpicked
in Newlyn, Cornwall. Demand for Christmas will be high for these
products, so we need to give our supplier a bit of notice on large
Now Taking Christmas Orders
We are now taking orders for seafood platters for Christmas – please see our website for the full range. They were so popular last year it would be wise to order early – in case demand outweighs our physical ability to produce them!
Christmas Stock Arrives
We have just taken a delivery of various types of caviar with sell-by
dates well into the New Year. Certain chefs we supply have been tingling
with excitement waiting for these!
Here's to a busy Christmas...!
Well, here we go with the first blog article of our new website! With Christmas fast approaching, we are entering one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year in the shop. We are now taking orders for our range of platters, as well as oysters, smoked salmon, caviar, crevettes and whole salmon. We also have a limited number of wild salmon and seatrout which were frozen by us in the summer season. You can view our full range fish and Christmas specials by downloading the lists on the website.
Here’s to a busy Christmas and lots of happy customers! Cheers, Ian
